The SHELI Residence for Women

Supervised Home Environment for Learning Independence

Our SHELI program is designed to meet the social, recreational, and emotional needs of developmentally disabled young adults living in a supervised housing facility in a beautiful two story home in Teaneck, NJ.  The goals of this unique program are to prepare students in their transition to a group home or assisted living facility, and to promote their independence as adults.

All programs are designed and implemented from the perspective that the members are transitioning to a lifestyle that will necessitate their integration into the community. Cohesive groups of young women are developing “positive living experiences” on which to build their futures.

A trained staff of professionals, including special educators and therapists, create an environment which facilitates support for members to share both in their similarities as well as their differences, thereby creating a family of caring individuals.  Our groups have shown potential for creating strong friendships in this structured environment.

Programs offer an array of activities, including food preparation, individual and group house chores, learning chaburah program, attending minyanim and shiurim, recreational opportunities, group trips to areas of interest, mall shopping, and workshops on productive leisure time management.  In addition, SHELI encourages its participants to pursue individual interests and activities under the guidance of its specially trained staff.
